Our desires on any animation project is to provide realistic movement with the minimal complications. We have been very successful in moving things with pneumatics versus using complex and problematic hydraulics. In many cases air can provide even more realistic movements. Some designers and companies have worked for years to develop "compliant hydraulics". If you think about it, that is exactly what pneumatics can give you if done correctly. And of course, the cost difference for the initial construction and the ongoing maintenance is huge.The EPA will not be on your back about an "air leak". But what happens when you spill large amounts of hydraulic oil into the ground? You do not want to find out. One project we were very successful at was to take a fully hydraulic dinosaur that was over the heads of the guests on a Theme Park ride and covert the figure to all pneumatics.
